Highclere Castle and the Carnarvon Family
Highclere Castle has been the seat of the aristocratic Carnarvon family since 1679. In 1838, the 3rd ‘Earl of Carnarvon transformed the existing residence into this stunning ‘castle.’ The current 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon living on the estate are totally involved in running Highclere. As well as tourism this vast estate of 1000 acres, includes a large working farm and also produces its own wine and gin. The 7th Earl was the late Queen Elizabeth II’s racehorse trainer, and the current Earl continues the family tradition of breeding racehorses on the Estate.
