about Kensington palace
Kensington Palace was originally built in 1605 as a modest villa in what was then the countryside just outside of London. In 1689 King William III and Queen Mary purchased the villa as a country retreat. Over the years, various monarchs transformed the palace and it has traditionally been used to house members of the royal family. Prince William and Kate lived here when they were first married. Today, the Palace still retains a country feel with its beautiful gardens and the large public space of Kensington Gardens beyond, in what is now central London.
