Dressing The Georgians Exhibition, Buckingham Palace
Dressing the Georgians exhibition takes place at the Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace from 21 April until 8 October 2023. This groundbreaking exhibition explores the life and fashion of the 18th Century from the reign of King George I in 1714 to the death of King George IV in 1830. The Georgian period was a time of great changes in the fashion of the day brought along by technology, innovation and the influences of trade and empire. Visitors can take in breathtaking portrait paintings by Gainsborough and Hogarth, as well as Queen Charlotte’s famous jewellery collection and other items that give a glimpse into the fashion and society of this era. In total, there will be over 200 works on display, from paintings and drawings to clothing and accessories.
Highlights
- See a rare portrait by Gainsborough of Queen Charlotte as well as items worn and used by the Queen, including her Book of Psalms and jewellery collection
- View a portrait of a high society couple by William Hogarth, which depicts a gown designed with an egg yolk shade of yellow. This colour became very popular in fashion, satisfying a Georgian craze for all things ‘Chinoiserie’
- A portrait painting of Lord Byron by Sanders shows Byron wearing trousers. It was in the Georgian period that trousers were adopted for use by the upper class for the first time, just one example of how many fashion trends of the Georgian era remain today
- Many unique items will also be on display, including a roll of hand-painted Chinese silk from the 1760s, a selection of beautiful English & French fans and jewel-encrusted snuff boxes
